Mulching is Better for the Lawn in St. Louis

This year is a great example why mulching the grass clippings and leaving them lay will provide a healthier looking lawn. The grass clippings contain vital nutrients that lawns need to grow and fight off disease and fungus. Mulching the lawn clippings also reduces the amount of fertilizer that must be applied to the lawn.

The lawns have been depleted of vital nutrients because of all of this rain we have had this year in St. Louis. Mulching the lawn clippings will help replenish some of the nutrients that were lost.

Everyone can learn a lesson from this rain that we have been receiving in St. Louis. This rain provides growing grass the water it needs to continue growing. It looks like winter is officially here in St. Louis, MO. All of the Christmas lights are going up, the lawns have stopped growing and do not need any more mows, or cuts, and we have had our first round of freezing precipitation. If you aerated your yard in the fall then this rain is great for your grass. The holes that the aerator pulled, allows the water to reach the roots of the lawn.

A great thing about winter lawn care is that the best thing you can do, is do nothing at all. The grass is dormant during the winter, but it is still living. Be sure to keep your lawn clear of debris, toys, limbs, etc. By keeping your lawn clear of debris, this will allow the grass to take full advantage of the winter sun.

The rain and snow that we usually get in St. Louis throughout the winter should provide your lawn with enough water for it to remain healthy. But, if we have an unusually dry winter here in St. Louis make sure to give it some water. One inch a week should do.

It looks like most of the leaves have fallen from the trees and are all over the lawns. There is still time before the first snow to get them cleaned up.

I cleaned up a few yards this past week and the lawns looked beautiful after they were completed. By removing the leaves this allows the grass to get much needed sunlight during the winter months.

There were two lawns that I aerated in West County in the past week and these lawns were watered perfectly for aerating. When aerating it is best to give your lawn a little soaking before aeration. This allows the tines on the aerator to pull deep plugs from the lawn. Pulling deep tines will allow better relief of lawn compaction.

It is getting towards the end of the season for overseeding your lawn, but the ground is still warm enough to promote germination. The days are still warm and will keep the ground warm enough for the seed to grow. If you are unable to overseed in the fall it is still fine to overseed in early spring.

The grass is starting to slow down and if the weather cools off and there should only be a few more lawn cuts for the season.

The leaves are starting to fall and it is time to start cleaning those leaves off the lawn. Removing the leaves from the grass in the fall will make your lawn look better, but will also clear your lawn of any debris that may smother the grass and prevent it from getting off to a good start in the spring.
